Walmart Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) Tagging Program

Walmart is committed to Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) as a functional tool to combat loss.

All Walmart US stores are equipped with Sensormatic’s Acousto-Magnetic (AM) Technology with exit systems and deactivators at Point of Sale (POS). A critical component of the program is Source Tagging, and as part of our corporate strategy the program ensures inventory visibility, increased sales, and a reduction in shrink. Walmart continues investing to equip our stores with Sensormatic EAS (AM) Exit Systems. AM and RFID Source Tagging are both integral in the execution of and ultimate success of this strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if my product needs an Acousto Magnetic (AM) Label?

Your Walmart merchant should be able to confirm which of your products require Acousto Magnetic (AM) labels and if RFID tags are required for your products.

  • What is the difference between Acousto Magnetic (AM) labels, Radio Frequency (RF) labels, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags?
    • Acousto Magnetic (AM) is a passive label that alarms when not deactivated at POS. This is the only frequency label approved by Walmart for the EAS program
    • Radio Frequency (RF) is a frequency label and does not work in Walmart’s EAS systems and is not approved for use
    • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is used for inventory tracking and placement. It is not tied into the EAS system and is leveraged differently within the stores. If you have an RFID related question, please contact us at St.Walmart.Sensormatic@jci.com
  • Can I use an Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) label instead of an Acousto Magnetic (AM) label?

No – Because they serve different purposes and do not replace each other. You may need both depending on your product. Please contact your Walmart merchant for labeling requirements for your specific products.

  • What do I need to consider before getting Acousto Magnetic (AM) Labels?

Label performance and placement are critical on each product and need to be considered after you have verified that your product requires an Acousto Magnetic (AM) EAS label.

  • Can I buy any Acousto Magnetic (AM) label that meets the Walmart specification?

YES – Any label that meets the Walmart specification is acceptable. Label placement certification for the specific product is required.

  • Does a label placement certification cover more than one product?

NO - Due to differences in packaging and product characteristics, each individual product requires label and placement certification.

  • How do I know what Acousto Magnetic (AM) labels have passed performance testing and meet Walmart’s specification?

You should receive or you can request a certification report from your label provider. If you need to check if Sensormatic has tested/certified your label placement, please email gstnalab@jci.com

  • Is there documentation needed for certification?

Suppliers are responsible to ensure that the labels being purchased for Walmart product are certified. Some label suppliers provide certification for label performance and placement. Sensormatic provides testing and certification thru their testing centers around the world. You will receive a copy of your certification results if your product is certified in a Sensormatic testing facility. gstnalab@jci.com

  • Can testing be done without going through a certification center?

Suppliers can do their own testing, but due to the complexity of the sample size, label placement, the need for detection and deactivation with Walmart specific hardware, we encourage you to use the certification testing center
